EU Preparing to Send Election Observer Mission to Bangladesh: Amir Khasru
The European Union (EU) is preparing to deploy an election observer mission to Bangladesh ahead of the upcoming national polls, BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said today (8 October).
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller at the BNP chairperson’s political office in Gulshan, Khasru said the decision follows formal invitations from the interim government and the Election Commission.
“The EU is interested in sending observers to the upcoming national election and has decided to do so after receiving formal requests. They expect the election will be transparent, credible, and participatory,” Khasru stated.
He added that the meeting primarily focused on the upcoming general election, expected to be held in the first half of February. “Everyone is showing interest and waiting for the polls. There was a long discussion about the electoral process,” he said.
Khasru noted that the EU has historically played a positive role in Bangladesh’s electoral process and expressed optimism that it would continue to do so. “We have nothing to complain to foreigners about. What happens in Bangladesh will be decided by its people,” he said.
The BNP leader further mentioned that the EU wants to maintain its longstanding trade relations with Bangladesh while supporting efforts to institutionalise democracy, strengthen the independence of democratic institutions, and make parliament more effective.
During the meeting, both sides discussed the electoral process, public expectations, the democratic environment, and measures to enhance the parliamentary system.
In response to a question regarding a recent meeting between foreign diplomats and Awami League leader Saber Hossain Chowdhury, Khasru said, “Who meets whom and where is their personal matter. We have no comment on that.”
