BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Thursday (25 September) accused Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami of “working with fallen fascist forces” and slammed its opportunistic political stance over the years. Speaking at a press briefing at the BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, he alleged that Jamaat had repeatedly sided with the Awami League despite benefiting from BNP’s role in reinstating the party into politics.
Rizvi recalled that it was BNP founder Ziaur Rahman who allowed the previously banned Jamaat to return to mainstream politics. Yet, he said, Jamaat continuously criticised Ziaur Rahman while aligning with Awami League decisions — from joining the 1986 elections together to participating in violent movements for a caretaker government in the mid-1990s. He also accused Jamaat of pressuring BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia into contesting the 2008 elections against her will.
The BNP leader further alleged that Jamaat is now seeking to “rehabilitate the Awami League and improve ties with India,” while also accusing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of establishing a “fascist regime.” Citing reported leaked audio documents, Rizvi claimed they showed Hasina’s direct orders for shootings, arson, and violence during protests. He warned that if fascist forces rise again, pro-democracy activists would face severe consequences. Rizvi also questioned interim government adviser Sajib Bhuiyan’s reported Tk2,500 crore allocation for his constituency and criticised senior officials allegedly pursuing partisan ambitions.
