A dawn-to-dusk hartal is underway in Bagerhat today (8 Sept) in protest against the Election Commission’s decision to reduce one parliamentary seat in the district.
The hartal, enforced by the BNP-Jamaat backed Sorbodolio Sommilito Committee, began around 8am and has caused severe disruptions. Protesters have:
1.Blocked at least 20 key points including Bagerhat Bus Stand, highways, and the DC office roads with vehicles, logs, and benches.
2.Set fire to tires to block roads and disrupt traffic.
3.Locked the Election Commission office gate at 8:30am.
4.Obstructed officials’ movement, forcing the DC Ahmed Kamrul Hasan to shift to the District Relief and Rehabilitation Office.
At the same time, protesters intercepted the Deputy Director of the Local Government Division, Dr. Fakhrul Hasan, forcing him to walk to his office.BNP and Jamaat leaders including MA Salam, Muzaffar Rahman Alam, Maulana Rezaul Karim, and Sheikh Muhammad Yunus are leading the demonstrations. The Sorbodolio Sommilito Committee had earlier announced a three-day hartal after the EC published its final gazette on 4 Sept confirming the seat cut, which protesters argue disregards public opinion and has deeply hurt millions in Bagerhat
