BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has hinted that the party’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman could return to Bangladesh before the 13th national election schedule is announced in December. Preparations are underway to ready his office and residence in Gulshan, Fakhrul confirmed in an exclusive interview with The Business Standard.
On the question of BNP’s prime ministerial candidate, Fakhrul said:
“If our party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is physically well, she will assume the role.”“Otherwise, it will be our Acting Chairman, Tarique Rahman.”
Tarique, who has been in London since 2008, is expected to return “very soon” after resolving some pending legal and personal matters. Fakhrul added that he could return even before December’s schedule announcement.The Election Commission has already confirmed that the polls will be held in February, with the schedule due in early December.
BNP leaders have been intensifying talk of Tarique’s return, especially after his recent acquittals. Of the 84 cases filed against him, including the 21 August grenade attack case, the Zia Orphanage Trust case, and money laundering charges, he was previously convicted in five. But since August last year, the High Court has acquitted him in all cases, and on 4 September 2025, the Appellate Division upheld the acquittal in two grenade attack cases.The possibility of his return gained further momentum after Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury confirmed in June that there is “no obstacle” to Tarique’s comeback as a citizen.BNP insiders believe his return will mark a turning point in the party’s campaign ahead of the February polls, especially in the wake of the Awami League regime’s fall during last year’s student-led mass uprising.
