After more than a month of silence, an Odisha police unit in India has acknowledged that it detained three elderly siblings in November and on 24 December sent them into Bangladesh, claiming they are Bangladeshi citizens; the family of 63-year-old Muntaj Khan, his 59-year-old brother and 70-year-old sister was only informed after weeks of not knowing their whereabouts, and police say they were handed over at the West Bengal–Bangladesh border following an internal verification, despite local authorities in West Bengal saying they were never consulted about their citizenship status.
