Testimony has begun today in a case involving the enforced disappearance and torture of 26 individuals at the Joint Interrogation Cell (JIC) during the previous Awami League regime. The accused include ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her defence affairs adviser Major General (Retd.) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, and 11 former and serving army officers.
On Monday (January 19), the testimony along with the opening statement will be presented before a three-member judicial panel of the International Crimes Tribunal-1, led by Chairman Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Mozumder. The other members of the panel are Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and retired District and Sessions Judge Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
In addition to Sheikh Hasina and Tarique Ahmed Siddique, the case names five former Directors General of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), five former directors, and one former lieutenant colonel as accused. Currently, three individuals have been arrested in connection with the case.
Among the ten absconding accused, five previously served as Directors General of the DGFI at different times. They are Lieutenant General (Retd.) Mohammad Akbar Hossain, Major General (Retd.) Saiful Abedin, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Saiful Alam, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Ahmed Tabrez Shams Chowdhury, and Major General (Retd.) Hamidul Haque.
The remaining accused include Sheikh Hasina’s former defence affairs adviser Major General (Retd.) Tarique Ahmed Siddique; former DGFI director Major General (Retd.) Mohammad Touhidul Ul Islam; Major General Kabir Ahammed; and former Lieutenant Colonel Mokhsurul Haque.
