The elephant died at around 1 pm on Monday (January 19), confirmed Dr. Sultan Ahmed, a professor at the Department of Microbiology at Sylhet Agricultural University. He said, "We tried our best to save the elephant. The elephant suffered serious injuries to its spine and legs."
The pet elephant's name was Sundarmala. She was 42 years old. The elephant's owner is Kamrul Islam, a resident of Karmadha area of Kulaura upazila in Moulvibazar.
Rakibul Haque, founder and chairman of Dhaka's animal welfare organization People for Animal Welfare Foundation, said on his cellphone at around 1 pm today that the elephant had been lying in a lethargic state since morning. It died at 12:40 pm. Abdus Sabur, a representative of the elephant's owner, was present at the scene at the time.
Rakibul Haque said that the injured elephant was lying near the scene after being rescued. The animal did not have the strength to stand. Its stomach was swollen and it could not move its right hind leg. There was a wound along the middle of its spine on its back. They believe that the elephant's blood pressure may have increased due to these reasons and may have had a heart attack.
