A Jamaat-e-Islami leader was killed at his residence in West Rajabazar, Dhaka, early Monday after assailants tied up his wife and carried out the attack.
The victim was identified as Anwarullah, vice president of Jamaat for Ward-27.
According to police, the incident occurred around 3am. Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, said a group of individuals cut through the grills of a two-story house to gain entry.
After entering the house, they bound Anwarullah’s wife and later killed him. The assailants then took cash and gold ornaments before leaving the house.
Family members alleged that the killing was premeditated. However, police said the murder may have been linked to a burglary.
CCTV footage showed that the assailants first cut the balcony grill and then the grill of a room to enter the house. They were seen leaving nearly two hours later. Police said the assailants remained inside the house for more than two hours, using the same grill as the point of entry and exit.
