BNP Nominated Candidate Barred from Contesting in Cumilla-4 over Loan Default
Lawyers have said that BNP-nominated candidate Manjurul Ahsan Munshi will not be able to contest the election in the Cumilla-4 constituency as he has been declared a loan defaulter.
On Thursday (January 8), the Chamber Court stayed a High Court order that had earlier removed Manjurul Ahsan Munshi’s name from the list of loan defaulters. As a result, he will now remain listed as a loan defaulter.
During the scrutiny of nomination papers at the Returning Officer’s office, 76 nomination papers across 11 parliamentary constituencies in Cumilla were declared valid. Among them, Manjurul Ahsan Munshi’s nomination was also declared valid on January 3.
However, his rival candidate Hasnat Abdullah, nominated by the NCP, had raised an objection. Hasnat Abdullah is backed by the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance.
Meanwhile, Manjurul Ahsan Munshi’s name appeared on the official list of loan defaulters. Although the High Court had initially stayed the list, Premier Bank authorities later filed an appeal with the Chamber Court seeking a stay of that order. On Thursday, the Chamber Court granted the appeal and stayed the High Court’s decision, effectively reinstating Manjurul Ahsan Munshi’s status as a loan defaulter.
