The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB) has uncovered an illegal iPhone assembly factory set up in the capital under the direct supervision of Chinese nationals. Fake iPhones were assembled there using various iPhone parts imported from abroad to evade taxes and supplied to the local market.
The DB arrested three members of the fraud ring, which had been operating for about a year and a half, in separate raids in Uttara and Nikunja areas of the capital on Wednesday (January 7). 363 iPhones of different models, iPhone parts and various mobile assembly machineries were recovered in the raid.
Deputy Police Commissioner of DB Mirpur Division Mohiuddin Mahmud Sohel gave this information at a press conference organized at the DMP Media Center on Minto Road in the capital on Thursday (January 8) afternoon.
He said that on January 7, based on a secret information, DB Police conducted a simultaneous operation in Uttara Sector 17 and Nikunj-1 area. During the operation, one person with 58 iPhones from Uttara area and two Chinese citizens with 305 mobile phones from Nikunj-1 area were arrested. During the arrest, in addition to illegal mobile phones, various iPhone parts, assembly machinery and foreign liquor were recovered.
