An unexploded bomb from the time of the Second World War has been recovered in Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar, causing panic and shock among local residents. For more than a decade, people had been using the bomb unknowingly as a place to wash clothes, thinking it was just a heavy piece of iron. When it was finally identified as a powerful bomb, fear spread quickly throughout the area.
The bomb was found beside a pond in Lot Ukhiyargona Tashakhali area of Ward No. 8 under Kawarkhop Union in Ramu. Police said that around 10 to 15 years ago, during pond renovation work, locals lifted the object from the water and left it on the bank. Over the years, daily activities continued around it, especially women washing clothes there. Later, after the pond was filled, the bomb remained abandoned on the homestead land of two local residents.
The issue came to light after historian and lawyer Shirupon Barua shared photos of the bomb-like object on Facebook, suggesting it could be a Japanese bomb from World War II. Police and army ammunition experts later confirmed it as an unexploded bomb weighing around 300–320 kilograms. A security perimeter has been set up, and residents have been asked to stay away until it is safely neutralized. Authorities said maximum caution will be maintained to avoid any danger.
