The government has promulgated the “July Mass Uprising (Protection and Determination of Liability) Ordinance, 2026” with the aim of providing legal protection to participants of the July 2024 mass uprising and withdrawing all cases filed against them, according to a BSS report.
A gazette notification in this regard was issued yesterday, Sunday (January 25), by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs. Earlier, the draft of the ordinance was approved at a meeting of the Advisory Council held on January 15, chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
The ordinance defines students and members of the public who participated in support of the July 2024 mass uprising as “mass uprising activists.”
It states that all civil and criminal cases filed against individuals who took part in the movement aimed at toppling a fascist regime and establishing democracy, human rights, and the rule of law will be withdrawn. Subject to government certification, if any case or legal proceeding against such activists remains pending, the court shall immediately withdraw the case upon application by the Public Prosecutor and grant discharge or acquittal to the accused.
