A natural gas seepage in Haripur—located between Jaintiapur and Gowainghat in Sylhet—continues to burn relentlessly nearly seven decades after a historic drilling explosion. The site, just 25 km from Sylhet city, has become a strange yet fascinating attraction for locals and visitors, who can reach it within 30–50 minutes by bus, CNG, or autorickshaw.

The phenomenon began in 1955 when Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) started gas exploration in the area. A sudden blast during drilling created a deep crater and triggered continuous gas leakage through nearby geological faults. When exposed to air, the escaping gas ignited—creating a flame that has burned non-stop ever since, unaffected by rain, wind, day, or night.

Today, Haripur’s burning crater stands as a living reminder of the 1955 accident and remains one of Sylhet’s most mysterious natural sights.
