Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Bangladesh is reaching alarming levels. According to the National AMR Surveillance Report 2025 by IEDCR, 41% of ICU patients are not responding to any antibiotics. The study analyzed 96,477 samples nationwide between July 2024 and June 2025, testing the effectiveness of 71 antibiotics.

Key findings: 7% of all samples had pan-drug-resistant (PDR) organisms, 46% had multi-drug-resistant (MDR) strains, and 89% of ICU samples were MDR. Use of WHO Watch-Group antibiotics rose from 77% to 90.9%, with ceftriaxone (33%) and meropenem (16%) most commonly used.

Professor Dr. Zakir Hossain Habib warns that irregular and excessive antibiotic use has pushed AMR to dangerous levels, posing a major public health risk. “Preserve antibiotics, protect your life,” he urged.
