The recent earthquake caused significant damage not only across Bangladesh but also impacted the metro rail infrastructure. Multiple stations, such as Karwan Bazar, Bijoy Sarani, Pallabi, Mirpur 11, Mirpur 10, and Farmgate, suffered structural cracks. Specifically, cracks were detected on the floors of the electrical substation rooms at Karwan Bazar and Bijoy Sarani. Additionally, the control room at Pallabi station exhibited visible cracks.
Further inspection revealed that Mirpur 11 and Mirpur 10 stations had cracks on the substation floors and tiles. At Farmgate, the lift core wall developed noticeable fissures. These damages have raised questions about the structural integrity of the metro system following the seismic event. Despite these concerns, the metro continued its service after officials implemented increased security protocols to ensure passenger safety.
Authorities have stated that comprehensive tests and assessments are underway to thoroughly evaluate the extent of the damage. They emphasize that passenger safety remains a top priority. However, the decision to keep the metro operational amid these findings has sparked unease among commuters and experts, who remain cautious about the system’s resilience after the earthquake.
