BNP Rejects Proposal for Referendum Before National Election: Mirza Fakhrul

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has firmly rejected the proposal by the National Consensus Commission to hold a referendum before the upcoming national election.

At a press conference titled “BNP’s Analysis on the Recommendations of the National Consensus Commission” held at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan on Thursday (October 30) at noon, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the party’s stance clear.

Opposing the idea of holding a referendum before the election, Mirza Fakhrul said that the commission’s recommendations mention the possibility of organizing a referendum either before or on the day of the national election to discuss the implementation of the July Charter.

He pointed out that the Chief Adviser has already announced that the national election will be held in the first half of February 2026, making it impractical to hold a referendum beforehand.

Citing the high financial cost, logistical challenges, extensive deployment of law enforcement, and the massive arrangements required for a national election, Fakhrul described the proposal for a pre-election referendum as “illogical and irrational.”
