At least 20 passengers were injured as protesters demanding district status for Bhairab hurled stones at passing trains during a railway blockade today, paralyzing services on the Dhaka-Chattogram and Dhaka-Sylhet routes for over two hours. The demonstration, held at Bhairab Bazar Railway Junction, escalated when agitators clashed with authorities, forcing several trains including the Upakul Express and Karnaphuli Express to a halt.
Local leaders, including Md Rafiqul Islam and Mawlana Shahriar, blamed “a vested group” for provoking violence, but vowed to continue their movement until Bhairab is declared a district. “We have been demonstrating peacefully for 15 days,” they said, warning of indefinite road, rail, and river blockades if the government remains unresponsive.
Police confirmed train operations resumed after talks with local authorities but said an investigation is underway to identify those behind the attack. The agitation comes after the Reform Commission’s October 11 proposal placing Kishoreganj under Mymensingh Division, sparking widespread anger in Bhairab. Protesters have already blocked major highways and plan a river blockade on the Meghna River tomorrow.
