A Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal chief prosecutor, Mohammad Tajul Islam, claimed on Thursday that ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina attempted to provoke the Bangladesh Army and induce a civil war. Speaking at the tribunal premises, he said the alleged attempt followed the detention of 15 army officers, but that the provocation did not succeed as the army remained loyal to the rule of law.
Tajul Islam accused Hasina of instigating the unrest by suggesting some officers were being tried and urging them to rise up. He asserted that the army demonstrated a strong commitment to the law and declined to act on her provocations, emphasizing that the military stayed within the bounds of legality.
On the same day, Tajul Islam also criticized Hasina for fleeing to India on 5 August last year and for showing no remorse over the July Uprising. He claimed there is no repentance in her actions, and he reproached her for issuing threats on social media, including warnings to kill complainants and witnesses or burn their homes. Earlier, ICT-1 set 13 November as the date to announce the verdict in the case.
