Clash Erupts Over ‘Joy Bangla’ Chant at Chattogram Concert, One Shot
Tension broke out between two groups at a concert in Chattogram city’s GEC intersection area on Saturday night (October 11) after some attendees chanted “Joy Bangla.” The situation escalated into a violent clash and gunfire around 8:30 p.m.
One youth, identified as Md Sharif (23), sustained bullet injuries and was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH). Another person was reportedly injured, though their identity has not yet been confirmed.
A video of the incident later went viral on social media, showing several individuals attempting to break the main gate of the convention center. Law enforcement personnel on the scene reportedly fired warning shots to bring the situation under control.
The concert was organized by a motorcycle manufacturing company, where popular rock band Artcell was scheduled to perform. Although the event was open to the public and began earlier in the evening, it was eventually canceled following the confrontation.
An eyewitness named Naim, who was present at the scene, said the conflict began when a group of individuals shouted the “Joy Bangla” slogan. He claimed that those chanting were members of a banned faction of the Chhatra League, sparking a heated argument with another group that soon turned violent.
Sub-Inspector Alauddin Talukder of the CMCH police outpost said that the injured and their companions were not providing clear information, making it difficult to determine the exact cause of the incident.
Meanwhile, Saiful Alam, convener of the Chattogram Metropolitan Chhatra Dal, visited the hospital to see the injured. He told reporters that the trouble started when “Awami League slogans” were shouted inside the venue, leading to chaos and several injuries.
Khulshi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahinur Zaman said an investigation is underway, and statements are being taken from eyewitnesses. Senior police officials also visited the scene to assess the situation.
