The Indonesian government has caused controversy by refusing to issue visas to Israeli gymnasts for the upcoming 2025 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta, scheduled for October 19–25. Though Israel had planned to send a full team, including Olympic champion Artem Dolgopyat, Indonesia's senior law minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra announced that the visa sponsorships were withdrawn. The decision follows rising domestic pressure from religious groups and political voices opposed to Israeli involvement, especially due to the ongoing Gaza conflict. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) responded with a cautious statement, recognizing Indonesia’s decision and expressing hope for a “safe and inclusive environment” for all athletes. However, FIG stopped short of relocating the event, which is permitted under its statutes. This situation highlights how geopolitical tensions increasingly affect international sports.
