Renowned Bangladeshi photographer and activist Shahidul Alam returned to Dhaka early Saturday morning after being released from an Israeli prison. He arrived at 4:45am on a Turkish Airlines flight and was greeted by his family, colleagues from Drik and Pathshala, and well-wishers at the VIP gate. Alam, who was detained by Israeli forces while aboard the Freedom Flotilla Coalition vessel bound for Gaza, expressed deep gratitude to Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus for his support. He said, “The love of the people of Bangladesh made it possible for me to come back. But we must remember that the people of Gaza are still not free. They continue to face attacks and persecution. Our work is not over yet.” He added,

“What felt the most insulting was when they threw our Bangladeshi passport to the ground.

This impacted me deeply, and we must seek accountability for this affront. No country should get away with treating us this way.” Alam had been held at Ketziot Prison in Israel after the flotilla’s interception. Following his release, he traveled to Istanbul before returning to Dhaka. He concluded, “We need a thousand more flotillas like ours until Palestine is free.”
