María Corina Machado of Venezuela Wins 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for Her Fight for Democracy
Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has been awarded this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. On Friday (October 10), the Norwegian Nobel Committee honored the pro-democracy politician for her relentless struggle to uphold democratic rights and her efforts to lead Venezuela’s transition from dictatorship to democracy.
The committee stated that Machado was recognized for her unwavering dedication to defending democratic freedoms in the face of authoritarian rule.
Last year, the Nobel Peace Prize went to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo, which represents atomic bomb survivors and advocates for a world free of nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump had expressed strong interest in winning this year’s Peace Prize but was not selected.
Notably, a total of 338 individuals and organizations were nominated for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. However, the Nobel Committee does not disclose nominee names, and the list will remain sealed in a confidential vault for the next 50 years.
