In the Indian Ocean island nation of Madagascar, Prime Minister Olivier Mahafaly announced his resignation in compliance with a recent court directive that called for the formation of a new consensus government to resolve the ongoing political crisis.
Mahafaly stated that his decision followed the ruling of the country’s highest constitutional court, which instructed President Hery Rajaonarimampianina to dissolve the existing government and appoint a new prime minister with broad political support.
The political unrest in Madagascar has escalated in recent months, triggered by the government’s passage of a controversial electoral law last month, which initially barred opposition leader Marc Ravalomanana from contesting upcoming elections. The earlier version of the law had sparked deadly street protests.
