Shakib’s Social Media Post Fuels Claims of Ties to Hasina’s Ousted Regime

Shakib Al Hasan’s social media post wishing former ruler Sheikh Hasina a happy birthday sparks criticism and raises questions about his political affiliations.

Asif stated, “He (Shakib) cannot be allowed to carry the flag of Bangladesh. It is in no way possible for me to allow him to bear the identity of Bangladesh’s jersey. Earlier, I did not tell this to the BCB, but now there will be a clear directive from me to the board — Shakib Al Hasan will never be able to play for the Bangladesh team again.”

The dispute escalated after Asif accused Shakib of maintaining close ties with the Awami League, despite the cricketer’s repeated denials.

Asif added, “Whenever he (Shakib) wanted to return to the country or play, he said, ‘I was forced to accept the nomination. I am not involved in politics. I only contested the parliamentary election to serve the people of my constituency.’ But the real truth is that he is deeply linked with Awami politics — something that has now been proven.”

Asif was referring to a recent Facebook post by Shakib Al Hasan that reignited the debate. On Sunday night around 9 PM, Shakib posted a photo with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently in exile following a mass uprising, and wished her a happy birthday. His caption read: “Happy Birthday, Apa.”

The post triggered a wave of criticism online, sparking a virtual clash between Shakib and Asif, and fueling discussions about the intersection of sports and politics in Bangladesh.
