BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman has said that, if the BNP comes to power through the people’s mandate, existing laws on the protection of animals and other species — as well as the wider ecosystem — will be updated to meet present needs. However, he emphasised that public awareness is more important than legislation when it comes to safeguarding biodiversity and protecting wildlife.

“Animal rights are not only a moral duty toward other living beings,” Tarique Rahman said, “but also essential for conserving biodiversity, maintaining ecological balance, and ensuring a healthy and sustainable future for humankind. When people show compassion toward animals and ensure safe habitats for them, it reflects the maturity and moral advancement of society.”

He added that biodiversity is increasingly under threat for various reasons, while incidents of wildlife trafficking are also rising at an alarming rate, putting animal habitats in jeopardy. “Just as the practice and protection of democracy are necessary to uphold human rights, the protection of ecosystems is essential to securing the rights of animals,” he said.
