Sushila Karki Takes Office as Nepal’s Interim Prime Minister
Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has assumed office as the interim prime minister of Nepal. She was sworn in on Friday night (12 September) at the presidential palace in Kathmandu, marking the first time the Himalayan nation has a woman at its helm, NDTV reported.
Earlier in the day, Nepal’s President Ram Chandra Paudel met with Army Chief Ashok Raj Sindel and protesting students. During the meeting, the president agreed to the demands of Generation Z demonstrators and decided to appoint Karki as the head of the interim government.
Later, the president’s press adviser, Kiran Pokharel, said in a statement: “President Ram Chandra Paudel will appoint former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as prime minister. Her swearing-in is scheduled for 9 p.m. local time.”
Karki stepped into the role following the resignation of KP Sharma Oli amid youth-led protests. A small cabinet has already been formed to support the interim administration.
Sushila Karki served as Nepal’s chief justice from 2016 to 2017, earning popularity among young people for her firm stance against corruption. She is an alumna of Banaras Hindu University in India.
