After six and a half years, Dhaka University students are finally heading to the polls for the 38th Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) elections today. Voting runs from 8am to 3pm at eight polling centres across the campus, where 39,874 students—18,959 from female halls and 20,915 from male halls—will elect representatives for 41 posts: 28 in Ducsu and 13 in the hall unions.

This year sees a record-breaking 471 candidates contesting central posts, including 45 for Vice President, 19 for General Secretary, and 25 for Assistant General Secretary. Across hall unions, 1,035 candidates vie for 234 positions. The number of candidates has almost doubled compared to 2019, reflecting heightened student engagement and the importance of this long-awaited election.

For the first time, polling centres have been set up outside residential halls, with extended voting hours and QR-coded voter verification for instant identity checks. Four new posts have been introduced, and live vote counts will be displayed on LED screens outside each polling centre, adding transparency and excitement.

The main contest revolves around four dominant panels: Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Anti-Discrimination Students’ Union, United Students’ Alliance, and the Resistance Council. This year’s campaign has been vibrant and creative, featuring unique promotional methods like UNO cards, legal notices, and even dollar bills, alongside online engagement and campaign videos that energized the campus. Students emphasize competence, ideology, and realistic manifestos as key factors in choosing their representatives, setting the stage for a historic and highly participatory election.
