At least 19 people have died and over 250 injured after police clashed with thousands of Gen Z protesters in Kathmandu, Nepal. Demonstrations erupted in response to the government’s recent ban on several social media platforms, including Facebook, which youth argue curbs freedom of expression.Protesters, many in school and college uniforms carrying the national flag and placards, attempted to march toward the Parliament, but police erected barbed wire barricades and used tear gas and rubber bullets to stop them. The violent crackdown prompted the resignation of Nepal’s Home Minister, while the UN has demanded an independent probe into the incident.

Authorities have imposed a curfew until 10 p.m. local time to restore order around the Parliament area, but demonstrations continue to spread as young citizens voice their anger at social media restrictions and government corruption.

The tragic events highlight a generational demand for transparency, freedom of communication, and democratic rights, with civil society groups calling for accountability and protection for peaceful protesters.
