Max Verstappen storms to pole at Monza with a record-shattering 1:18.792, setting the fastest lap in F1 history at an average speed of 264.7 km/h.
Max Verstappen said about his record-setting lap after securing pole at Monza:
Over the team radio, he exuberantly exclaimed:
“Yes guys! That’s unbelievable. A really good job. It worked out. It’s all good.”
Reflecting later to reporters, he added:
“I think that final lap was pretty decent. To get pole here for us is big. It’s not always been a good track for us, especially last year was quite a bit of a disaster.”
Verstappen discussed the improved car setup and his role in choosing what ultimately proved to be the winning direction:
“We have obviously learned and understood quite a lot since last year… On Friday I was more satisfied with the balance than usual… That allows us to make small steps after each session.
