Five people died and five others were injured after a bus plunged into the Rahmatkhali canal on the Lakshmipur-Dhaka road in Sadar upazila, Lakshmipur, on Saturday morning. The bus, owned by Ananda Paribahan and carrying 25-30 passengers from Noakhali, fell near Chandraganj Kafil Uddin Degree College around 8:30 am.
Three passengers died instantly, while two more succumbed to injuries at a local hospital. The deceased were identified as Morshed Alam (50), Joynal Abedin (54), Humayun Rashid (40), Ripon Hossain (35), and Mazed Hossain (38), all residents of Shekharpur, Chandraganj upazila. Rescue teams recovered 20 passengers alive; others swam to safety.
The accident caused a one-hour road closure, resulting in heavy traffic congestion on both sides.
