Fresh violence has rocked Chittagong University (CU), with videos surfacing showing students being attacked by locals armed with machetes and sticks near Gate 2.
Following the repeated clashes, Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure has been imposed from CU Gate No. 2 to the nearby railgate, restricting gatherings of more than five people and carrying of firearms. The order, issued by Hathazari UNO & Executive Magistrate Md Abdullah Al Mumin, will remain effective from 2 pm on 31 August until midnight on 1 September.
At least 400 students and several teachers have been injured in the clashes. Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Md Kamal Uddin confirmed that the university medical college has run out of space to treat the injured. He alleged that “top Chhatra League cadres carried out the assault” and expressed frustration that despite repeated calls to authorities, no help came for hours.
