On Monday, September 22, 2025, heavy rainfall once again brought Dhaka to a standstill, but with a tragic and fatal consequence. The torrential downpour submerged large parts of the city, and in one incident, a man was killed by electrocution in the waterlogged streets.
The deceased was identified as Md. Amin, a 30-year-old shop employee. The incident took place in the Bangshal area of Old Dhaka, a part of the city notoriously susceptible to waterlogging. As Amin was navigating the flooded streets on his bicycle, he came into contact with electrified water and collapsed. According to eyewitnesses and police, a live electrical wire, possibly a loose one or one from an electric pole, had fallen into the stagnant water, turning the street into a death trap. Local residents attempted to rescue him using a bamboo pole to avoid electrocution themselves and rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The tragedy underscores the immense suffering caused by the city’s poor infrastructure. The rain, which began overnight and intensified on Monday morning, resulted in widespread waterlogging across Dhaka.
