Rice prices in Bangladesh have been rising across all varieties despite government assurances of ample supply and production. Coarse rice prices have increased from Tk50–54 to Tk60–62 per kilogram, with fine grains reaching Tk83–85 per kg. Food Adviser Ali Imam Majumder expressed confidence that the situation would stabilize soon, citing sufficient reserves and ongoing food security programs. However, wholesalers and traders find the price hike puzzling amid steady supply, with factors such as natural disasters, trader hoarding, and market manipulation blamed. Although the current Boro season produced a record harvest and government stockpiles remain high, prices continue to rise locally, contrasting with falling global rice prices. Analysts and consumers attribute inflation mainly to millers and corporate syndicates, criticizing weak government oversight. The rising cost of rice and other essentials is adding financial pressure on middle- and low-income households.
