Newsmax will pay $67 million to Dominion Voting Systems to settle a defamation lawsuit over false claims that Dominion rigged the 2020 presidential election. The settlement consists of $27 million paid immediately and $40 million over the next two years. The lawsuit, filed in August 2021, followed Newsmax airing baseless conspiracy theories promoted by Donald Trump and his allies. A Delaware judge ruled that Newsmax made defamatory claims, but the case was postponed from trial. Newsmax criticized the judge, alleging unfair treatment without evidence. Unlike Fox News, which settled with Dominion for $787.5 million, Newsmax’s ratings are much smaller, influencing the settlement size. Newsmax denies defamation and says its coverage met accepted journalistic standards, including a clarification aired in 2020. Meanwhile, other related lawsuits linked to 2020 election claims continue.
