US Says Bangladesh’s Rights Situation Improved After August Power Shift
The US State Department’s 2024 rights report says Bangladesh’s human rights situation has “somewhat stabilized” since the August 5, 2024 change of power, though concerns remain.
It cites last year’s deadly clashes between students, police, and Chhatra League that left hundreds dead and led to former PM Sheikh Hasina’s flight. The ousted government is accused of widespread abuses and granting impunity.
The interim government has detained many accused and, with UN support, plans to prosecute them in local courts and the International Crimes Tribunal.
