World Bank to Fund Bangladesh’s First Metro Rail Project with $2.5M Grant
For the first time, the World Bank will finance a metro rail project in Bangladesh — the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line 2, connecting Gabtoli to Demra through Old Dhaka. The $2.5 million grant will cover the design phase, feasibility studies, and tender preparation.
According to officials, the revised MRT 2 route will no longer include Narayanganj, which will instead be connected through MRT Line 7 in the future.
The 25-kilometer route will combine elevated and underground tracks, passing through major areas such as Mohammadpur, New Market, Lalbagh, and Sadarghat. The Planning Commission has prioritized MRT 2 over MRT 5 due to Old Dhaka’s high population density and growing transport demand.
The final project cost and loan amount will be decided after the completion of the design phase.
