Bangladeshi-origin British MP Rushanara Ali has stepped down from her role as the UK’s Homelessness Minister following widespread criticism over allegations that she evicted tenants from a townhouse she owns and then increased the rent by £700.

According to a statement from the British Prime Minister’s Office at 10 Downing Street on Thursday (7 August, local time), her resignation was formally accepted. The BBC reported that the controversy arose after Ali allegedly evicted four tenants from her East London property and significantly raised the rent — actions that several media outlets claimed were in violation of the country’s tenant rights laws.

The incident drew sharp criticism from opposition parties, ultimately forcing her to leave the ministerial post.

Rushanara Ali made history in 2010 as the first British MP of Bangladeshi origin. She has since been re-elected multiple times to represent the Tower Hamlets constituency, an area of London with a large Bangladeshi community.
