BUET students and their peers staged protests against the existing quota and promotion system, which allows diploma engineers to advance without examinations. Their demands include merit-based recruitment for Grade 9 positions, equal access to Grade 10 posts, and reserving the “Engineer” title exclusively for BSc degree holders.

Tensions escalated in front of the InterContinental when police baton-charged and fired sound grenades at the demonstrators, leaving several students injured.

In response, Hasnat Abdullah stated, “I strongly condemn the police attack on BUET students today. There is no justification for using force against a rightful and peaceful protest.”
