Engineering Students Announce ‘Long March to Dhaka’ on Wednesday Over Three-Point Demand

Engineering students have announced a “Long March to Dhaka” program to press home their three-point demand. The protest will be staged tomorrow (Wednesday, August 27) at Shahbagh in the capital.
The announcement came late Tuesday night (August 26) from Shahbagh, where protesting students said they were compelled to launch this program after the government ignored their ultimatum. They also called on engineering students across the country to join the demonstration.
The protesters alleged that despite holding BSc degrees, they continue to face discrimination in employment. They claimed that the quota system in the ninth and tenth job grades deprives them of opportunities. They further opposed the use of the title “engineer” by individuals without a BSc degree.
Earlier on Tuesday afternoon, BUET students blockaded the Shahbagh intersection, protesting the reported harassment of a former student at his workplace. Students from Dhaka University and other institutions later joined them in solidarity.
The blockade caused severe traffic disruptions in and around Shahbagh. Residents urged the authorities to take effective measures to prevent such recurring public suffering.
It may be noted that engineering students have been staging demonstrations for the past several days in support of their three-point demand.
