BNP Suspends All Party Positions of Advisor Fazlur Rahman for Three Months

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has suspended all party positions of party advisor Fazlur Rahman, including his basic membership, for three months over “repeated objectionable and misleading” statements regarding the July mass uprising, citing his unsatisfactory response to a show-cause notice.
The decision was confirmed by a BNP source on Tuesday evening (26 August).
According to the suspension letter sent to Fazlur Rahman, a show-cause notice was issued against him on 24 August. He failed to provide a written response and instead requested an extension of time. The party then granted him an additional 24 hours to submit a reply. However, the response submitted by him was deemed unsatisfactory.
The letter noted that, taking into account his contributions as a veteran freedom fighter, the party chose not to take harsher organizational measures but decided to suspend all his party positions, including his basic membership, for three months.
The letter further warned that, going forward, Fazlur Rahman must exercise caution when speaking on talk shows or social media, ensuring that he does not undermine the country’s dignity, violate party policies, or hurt the religious sentiments of the nation’s people.
